| Description | Abstract'Energy for Sustainable Development: A Policy Agenda' discusses critical energy policies, illustrated with concrete examples, necessary to address multiple development objectives, including economic growth, equity and environmental protection.The purpose of the publication 'Energy for Sustainable Development: A Policy Agenda' is to follow-up on the 2000 report 'World Energy Assessment: Energy and the Challenge of Sustainability', a collaborative work to which more than 100 scientists and development experts contributed, and to offer informed guidance on how to shape public policy so that it accelerates the growth of energy systems that support sustainable development. As the publication describes, policy makers are struggling to understand how to intervene most effectively to stimulate technological innovation, attract private investment, and refocus regulation to advance the economic, social, and environmental objectives of sustainability. Regrettably, there are no simple blueprints that will work in all situations, but experience over the last several decades has provided valuable insights and it is possible to extract many lessons that can be instructive to policy makers. Case studies throughout the volume provide examples of what has succeeded, and more often, what has failed, and why.
