The first Small is… Festival in 2009 was a great success and due to popular demand, the Small is... Festival is back and will be held on the 4th and 5th of September 2010. We hope to recreate the wonderful participatory feel of last year, including the fun but productive atmosphere, the open debates, the lively networking and exchange sessions, and the international feel – but with local food and hospitality very evident. However, the festival will be bigger and better this year, with increased opportunties to get involved, get debating, get sharing, and have a great time! With hands-on workshops, stalls and information sharing spaces, kids activities and great world music, there is something for everyone!

If you came last year we hope to see you again to pick up the discussions and the learning and the fun – and take it on to another level.

If you didn’t make it last year, check out the pictures and stories on the site and you’ll soon get a feel for what is a really unique event. We hope you’ll want to join us. The event is held in the beautiful Warwickshire countryside in the grounds of international development charity Practical Action.

Applications are open now for participant tickets for the weekend camping or day visitors here. Places at the festival are limited so please do apply early to secure your place.

Also get in touch if you would like to be a contributor, sharing skills in a workshop, having a stall to explain your organisations or products, or being part of a themed networking and exchange session. We are also open to applications for helpers to be part of the enthusiastic crew of people who help make the festival happen on the day and in the run up to the event.

Everything you need to learn about the festival and get involved should be on this site, but if you have any other questions or queries, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us on small_is@practicalaction.org.uk or call on 0800 389 1624.

Looking forward to seeing you in September for what we hope will be a life-changing experience.

"Stoking up a cookstove revolution: an Ashden Awards Research Report" by Anne Wheldon

If you're in London or passing by, join us for a stimulating discussion over drinks.

Anne Wheldon Technical Director at Ashden Awards will present on the Ashden Awards Research Report: "Stoking up a cookstove revolution: the secret weapon against poverty and climate change.”

The Ashden Awards bring to light inspiring sustainable energy solutions in the UK and developing world and help ensure that they are spread more widely.

The report gives many examples of stoves programmes across the developing world that provide affordable, robust ‘improved’ stoves that burn less fuel, cook faster and approximately halve harmful smoke emissions. Many use a chimney to remove smoke and gases from the kitchen, improving combustion.

“We think the time has come for greater finance and political will to roll out stoves. Just as donors have grasped the value of rolling out bed-nets against malaria, we want to see improved stoves make a real impact on the poor. Better stoves improve health, save lives, help mitigate the effects of climate change while also saving money,”Sarah Butler-Sloss, Founder Director, Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy.

National Seminar: 2nd Conference on Management of Natural Resources and Environment (Oct 2010)http://www.hedon.info/757/events.htmStarting: 23 Oct 2010 in India

2nd Annual Conference

Management of natural resources and environment: Call for papers

Soil, water and vegetation are the three basic natural resources. The survival of God’s creation depends upon them and nature has provided them as assets to human beings. The management of natural resources to meet people’s requirements has been practiced since the pre-Vedic era. Farmers were ranked high in the social system and village management was in their hands. They gained this knowledge and developed skill through experience and learning by doing. No doubt, the human life is depends on natural resources, but they are also dependent on humans for their sustainability. In nature there are ways and means, which ensure a balance between the various natural resources. However, advancement of human activities and excessive use of natural resources has created imbalance between the two. Their use / exploitation have far exceeded their natural replenishment rates.

Industrialization and various other developmental processes have added to the problem by enhancing pollution and global temperature and today the very future of mother earth is at stake. The most important resources affected are water, land and air. While planned development of resources brings in prosperity, the indiscriminate exploitation of nature leads to destruction of environment and degradation of resources. Natural resource management specifically focuses on a scientific and technical understanding of resources and ecology and the life supporting capacity of these resources. Its emphasis on sustainability can be traced back to early attempts to understand the ecological nature of American rangelands in the late 19th century and the resource conservation movement of the same time. This type of analysis coalesced in the 20th century and took on a more holistic, national and even global form culminating in Brundtland Commission and the advocacy of sustainable development. In India, an estimated area of 146.82 million hectare suffers from various kinds of land degradation due to water and wind erosion and other complex problems like alkalinity/salinity, water logging, and soil acidity. In addition to erosion, salinity and alkalinity, our soils are losing soil carbon and micronutrients due to irrational and unbalanced fertilizer use. This must be addressed urgently since nearly two-thirds of our farmlands are in some way either degraded or sick. Droughts and floods are also a common feature in many parts of the country. A large part of the country depends on rains for agriculture. Due to heavy deforestation and denudation of soils, the rainwater received does not percolate much in many areas for replenishing the aquifers and is lost in runoff. There is also over exploitation of available ground water for agricultural and other uses. Management of natural resources is one of the most critical aspects in the economic development of any country. However, under Indian conditions, it assumes more importance, because the limited natural resources have to be judiciously used to feed the ever-increasing population. The overall objective of NRMS is to facilitate improvement in livelihoods of rural poor through sustainable management of natural resources and will take into account the four natural resources, namely, land, water, climate and forestry. Beside the environment will be deliberated during the conference.

Guru Arjan Dev (GAD) Institute of Development Studies, Amritsar will be organizing its 2nd Conference on Management of Natural Resources and Environment in the last week of October 2010. The venue of the conference will be Conference hall of Guru Nanak Auditorium of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. The main theme of conference is sustainable use of natural resources in the context of tradeoff between development and environment and climate change. Papers are invited from interested participants on any of the following sub themes of seminar.

(a) Environmental policy instruments and institutions for sustainable use of natural Resources: Pollution taxes and marketable permits, participatory institutions such as joint forest management and water user associations and community action for controlling industrial water pollution.

(b) Environmental valuation: Case studies using stated and revealed preference methods for valuing water and forest resources. Benefit cost analysis of conservation of forests and surface and ground water sources.

(c) Natural resource accounting and measurement of Green GDP: Sectoral studies related to mining, forestry and irrigation. Generalization of national income and input-output accounts for measuring Green GDP. (d) Climate change effects and adaptation and mitigation strategies: Effects of climate change on agriculture, water supply, forestry and coastal and marine resources. Mitigation strategies and the role of forests and mangroves. Adaptation strategies for agriculture and water supply. Carbon credit and food security implications of natural resource degradation and climate change.

Keeping in view your vast expertise in the field, it will be highly appreciated if you please favour us by your valuable contribution by way of well researched paper. A copy of the paper, (both hard and soft) must reach us by the schedule dates. (Email Ids:
idsasr09@yahoo.com, kainthgs@Yahoo.com). Also gave wide publicity to this circular. There is no upper limit for the length of the paper. Proceedings of the conference will be published. All the registered delegates are entitled for a free copy of the Proceedings.

DATES

19-21 November 2010

Commonwealth Resort Hotel in Kampala

THEME

Climate Change, A Challenge to Businesses in the 21st Century.

We are delighted to invite you to the 2010 Pilot International Conference on Global Sustainable Development. The conference will bring together leading experts from a wide range of disciplines to discuss the impact realities of climate change and sustainable development. It also serves as an important international platform for stakeholders to enter into dialogue on policies and as an opportunity for decision and policy makers and their direct reports to hear the latest developments on climate change as well as to exchange opinions and ideas to help establish practical frameworks on how businesses can develop sustainably.

JUSTIFICATION

The 2009 international climate change conference that brought over 100 world leaders together in Copenhagen ended with a nonbinding agreement that urges major polluters to make deeper emission cuts, but does not require it. Although developing and developed countries are different in their historical emissions responsibilities and levels, and in their basic national characteristics and development stages, everybody has an obligation in fighting climate change because of its global nature and adverse effects on humanity and economies. It is for these reasons among others that the 2010 Pilot International Conference on Global Sustainable Development was convened to bring together leading experts from a wide range of disciplines to discuss the impact realities of climate change and sustainable development. It also serves as an important international platform for stakeholders to enter into dialogue on policies and as an opportunity for decision and policy makers and their direct reports to hear the latest developments on climate change as well as to exchange opinions and ideas to help establish practical frameworks on how businesses can develop sustainably. The conference will also provide lessons which can be applied for the Climate Change COP16, negotiations to be held in Mexico December 2010.
