GIRA Grupo Interdisciplinario de Tecnologia Rural Apropiada A.C

The Interdisciplinary Group for Appropriate Rural Technology (GIRA) is a private, non-profit organization that was created in 1985. GIRA is dedicated to design, develop and promote technologies that use natural resources in an environmentally and socially sustainable way. At the same time GIRA provides technical and logistical assistance to rural communities in projects that: i) preserve cultural traditions (traditional arts and crafts for example); ii) create jobs and economic initiatives based on the conservation and recuperation of local natural resources; iii) promote equal opportunities for women in society as well as in the home. GIRA is based in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, MEXICO. www.gira.org.mx

- First Prize of Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, in Health and Welfare Award, 2006. For GIRA’s woodstove improvement program "Clean and efficient cookstoves bringing health benefits in rural Mexico", including detailed research showing the health and environmental benefits of the new stoves. - First Prize for Conservation, November 2000, Ford Motor Company, Mexico. For the project “Restoring the river basin of the Lake Pátzcuaro through the sustainable use of firewood.â€? - SARD Prize, Agricultural Ecology Program, August 2000 Basel, Switzerland.
