The first study, by Dr Stephen Holgate and colleagues, was funded by HEI to take advantage of previous exposures conducted in Sweden and the US: it analyzed bronchial tissue samples from healthy and asthmatic volunteers exposed to diesel exhaust in Sweden and from healthy volunteers exposed to CAPs in North Carolina. It is described in
