Winrock International India, IndiaWinrock International India (WII) is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization established in 1998 under the Indian Societies Registration Act with its registered office in New Delhi. The Mission of WII is to “develop and implement solutions that balance the need for food, income, and environmental quality”. WII is affiliated to Winrock International, a global non-governmental organization with its headquarters in USA and a presence in over 40 developing countries.WII has the capability and experience on wide ranging issues to undertake challenging multi-disciplinary and cross-sectoral projects in the developmental sector by consolidating innovative concepts, sound research, new technologies, capacity building, and local knowledge to achieve long-term success. WII engages community-based institutions on issues at the micro level, while simultaneously pursuing policy level initiatives to sustain the developmental growth. In this process, WII works independently and in collaboration with government, industry, NGOs, research institutions, bilateral and multilateral development agencies, and other stakeholders. The main areas of expertise of WII are project planning; monitoring and evaluation; project management; research and analysis; training and capacity building; technology transfer facilitation; technical and financial advisory services; matching global resources to local requirements; information and communication technology; and networking. WII’s staff and resource persons comprise over 70 professionals who are experienced, qualified, innovative with multi-disciplinary strengths in engineering, energy & environment management, natural resource management, financial and policy analysis, economics, sociology, forestry, agriculture, institutional development, education and information sciences. WII is headed by a President and guided by a Board of Governors consisting of eminent individuals. WII’s developmental work focuses primarily in three thematic areas namely Energy and Environment (E&E), Natural Resources Management (NRM), and Climate Change (CLC). The efforts of these three thematic groups are further strengthened by an Outreach Division that is staffed by professionals in the field of extension and communication, and brings out several quality newsletters and documents and assists in organizing events such as workshops and seminars. Given below are brief descriptions of WII’s program areas. Energy & Environment The primary goal of the Energy and Environment (ENE) program is to improve access of rural people to clean energy sources and to promote sustainable energy development through accelerated commercialization and mainstreaming of different renewable energy technologies (RETs) and energy efficient and clean technologies. The major initiatives of ENE are in the areas of bio-fuel based rural electrification, mainstreaming renewable energy technologies, promotion of energy efficiency in different industrial and institutional sectors, and capacity building to enable and improve access to finance and credit services for renewable energy. WII’s core expertise in rural and renewable energy and energy efficiency lies in technology assessment, feasibility studies, preparing detailed project reports, technology transfer facilitation, design and demonstration of pilot projects, implementation guidance and support, improving access to financing and capital, and monitoring and evaluation, capacity building, information dissemination and outreach and conducting detailed energy audits and energy benchmarking studies. The activities are spread many states in India and the work is facilitated by professionals from WII’s field offices. Climate Change The major activities of the Climate Change (CLC) program include Carbon Advisory services, execution of CDM projects (development of Project Information Note (PIN); development of Project Concept Note (PCN), preparing the Project Design Document (PDD) consisting of mainly baseline study and Monitoring and Verification Protocol (MVP); estimation of emissions from the project; assistance for obtaining letter of approval of PCN from Government of India and facilitation/assistance during the validation process), capacity building workshops/conferences/training on CDM, GHG inventorization, studies on vulnerability to climate change and adaptation strategies, etc. WII is also involved in capacity building of various stakeholders in India which enables them in securing carbon credit. WII has been entrusted by various government organizations like Ministry of Environment and Forests and West Bengal Pollution Control Board to carry out CDM related activities at the centre and state levels. WII is a member of the Expert Committee on Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) constituted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India. Natural Resources Management The Natural Resources Management (NRM) program offers innovative management systems for efficient utilization and conservation of India’s natural resources, especially water and forest resources. The expertise of the group lies in working with rural communities, local and national NGOs, and the government in the areas of technical assistance, capacity building at various levels, and sector strategy and policy reviews in issues related to water and forest management. The NRM group works with foresters, scientists, research institutions, non-governmental organizations, and rural communities in several states, lending its expertise in all aspects of participatory resource management. Outreach The Outreach Program relates with a variety of people, programs and organizations through its publications in the form of newsletters, books, monographs and reports. Currently, WII publishes eight newsletters which reach over 10,000 organizations and development professionals across the world. It also manages the WII website and two other subject-specific websites: http://www.renewingindia.org and www.rupfor.org. Besides these, the Outreach program conducts seminars, conferences and training programs. | |
