energy experience
I have been working in the fields of energy and development for 20
years, and am currently a researcher at the University of Oxford’s
Environmental Change Institute (
www.eci.ox.ac.uk). I work on energy policy and
planning issues for developing countries, and poverty-focused
carbon offset activities. I have undertaken a number of contracts
involving cooking and carbon and organised an expert cooking/carbon
workshop in Oxford, sponsored by Climate Care and EcoSecurities in
2005

Previously I worked for 4 years, as a seconded expert on behalf of
the UK Department for International Development (DFID), on energy
policy for Africa at the European Commission’s DG Development. One
of my roles included the development of the 'EU Energy Initiative
for Poverty Eradication and Sustainable Development' launched at
WSSD. Prior to this I worked for many years on national and
international energy efficiency and renewable energy programmes,
including for the IEA.
For the last 7 years I have been a Trustee of a UK-registered
child-focused social welfare charity, CWS, operating in Nepal
(
www.childwelfarescheme.org). In 1999 I helped to
establish an improved cook-stove programme for the charity.
I started working life as a teacher of science in a remote
secondary school in Sierra Leone, where I introduced a photovoltaic
lighting system and cooked on a three-stone fire for a year !
