We are a consultancy firm offering services in energy & environment projects, including water development and natural resource management for sustainable rural development. We have extensive experience working in the Souhtern Africa Development Community SADC region and beyond.

Our mission is to make a contribution to the universal fight against poverty and enhance economic empowerment through sustainable development interventions, and our vision is to strive for excellency and gain recognition worldwide.

[top] [end]Recent Consultancies & Clients

  • September/October 2007: Facilitated a training workshop on rural energy and environment planning to rural development planners from Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The workshop was sponsored by the East and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI) and organized by Practical Action Southern Africa.
  • March 2006: Facilitated a programme review workshop of energy activities in Zimbabwe for Practical Action Southern Africa.
  • June/July 2005: Organised, coordinated and facilitated a Study Tour for Ethiopian Rural Energy Experts to visit organizations and communities involved in the production, promotion and use of different forms of improved efficient, end-use technologies in Malawi and South Africa. Offered training to the same group at MEETI in South Africa.
  • 2004 to 2005: Formed part of a multi-sectoral team of professionals and contributed a chapter on Impacts of Energy Utilisation Patterns on the Zambezi Basin Ecosystem as part of the Southern Africa Millennium Assessment Study.
  • April 2004: Developed a strategy for the promotion of energy efficient measures in small enterprises, institutions and households in the Highlands Community Livelihoods Project being implemented by CARE in Lesotho.
  • March 2004: Conducted an end-of-project evaluation for the Kajikomele Kulima Household Energy Project in the Rumphi District of Malawi.

Ecosynchron has expertise and experience in the following:

  • participatory needs identification and assessment,
  • information gathering using various tools such as surveys,
  • objectives-oriented project planning, including the logical framework,
  • project implementation and results-based monitoring and evaluation.

  • Needs-based designing of training packages at different levels including project managers, field implementation staff, end-users of energy and environmental products & services. We also develop and write training materials as well as carrying out training.

Below are some of the training courses we have offered:
  • September/October 2007: facilitated training workshop on rural energy and environment planning to rural development planners from Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The workshop was sponsored by the East and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI) and organized by Practical Action Southern Africa.
  • July 2004 at Mulanje in Malawi: Design principles for large scale cook stoves for promoters and designers in the SADC region.
  • 1997: Offered a 1-week training course giving overview of different al-ternative energy technologies includ-ing solar systems, micro-hydro, the biogas technology, etc. to rural devel-opment planners.
  • 1995 to 97: Gave a series of 1-week training courses to water supply engi-neers in Zimbabwe on the subject of photovoltaic system design, installa-tion, management and operation.

We cover all aspects of workshop organisation, preparation, facilitation and re-porting employing powerful tools such as objectives oriented project planning (OOPP) and METAPLAN. Facilitation & co-facilitation was offered for the following:
  • Workshop on Production and Marketing of SME/Institutional Cook-ing/Baking Stoves in the SADC region in Mulanje Malawi, July 2004.
  • SADC FANR database project regional workshop at the Bronte Hotel in Ha-rare in December 2003.
  • ProBEC Regional Workshop in Mohale's Hoek, Lesotho in October-November, 2003.
  • A range of ProBEC workshops from 1999 to 2003. Four were held in Zimbabwe, 2 in Lesotho and 3 in the Re-public of South Africa.
  • Workshop of Experts on Improved Biomass Stove Design and Dissemina-tion Strategies at the Vaal Triangle Technikon, Vereeniging, South Africa in March 2003.
  • Organizational review workshop for the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIAZ) in October 2002.

We undertake applied research work and studies tailor-made to meet the demands and requirements of a specific client. Over the past few years, we were commis-sioned by a range of clients to undertake a variety of studies which culminated in the following outputs:
  • 2004: Millenium Assessment Study: Assessment of Goods & Services of the Zambezi Basin focusing on energy.
  • 2003: Zimbabwe Environmental Assessment Report covering aspects of energy and environment and sponsored by UNDP and the Southern Africa Research & Documentation Centre (SARDC).
  • 2002: A report on SME and Institutional Cooking in Malawi: an assess-ment of the technical and socio-economic potential of biomass stoves ProBEC-GTZ and the Department of Energy, Malawi.
  • 1999: A report on Photovoltaic Water Pumping-A Case Studies in the Transfer of Clean Energy Technologies sponsored by the Climate Technology Initiative (CTI).
  • 1998: A Strategy for the Promotion of JCL Plant Oil sponsored by the Rockerfellar Foundation.
  • 1998: A paper on Financing Models for the Dissemination of Solar Energy Systems prepared for the International Conference on Financing Services for Decentralised Solar Energy Systems sponsored by CDG
