Jonathan Rouse

I am a UK-based Independent Consultant with a background in both science (BSc Applied Physics) and social-science (MA Rural Development). My interest and involvement in household energy issues began when I ran a small, participatory, improved stove design project in a rural area near Lucknow, India in 2000. I then spent 5 years as a Research Associate at Loughborough University, and I now work independently for a range of organisations including Practical Action, Climate Care, the World Bank, USEPA-PCIA, and UC Berkeley/ Berkeley Air.

One of my main areas of interest is the social and economic impacts of household energy on the poor in low-income countries. So many energy projects fail, or fail to upscale, because socio-economic and basic demand issues are overlooked. Much of my teaching and training highlights these issues, to equip people to effectively consult and understand users.

Much of my work is focused on rigorous monitoring and evaluation of household energy projects, and in this capacity I am becoming increasingly involved with carbon-finance, with Climate Care.

My passion is organic farming, and I spend most of my spare time growing vegetables and raising poultry. I also devote a considerable amount of time collecting and chopping wood: through winter we rely on biomass for most of our heating, hot water and cooking.
