Technology Informatics Design Endeavour (TIDE)

Technology Informatics Design Endeavour (TIDE) is a registered not-for-profit society set up in 1993 and registered under the Societies Registration Act. TIDE is an organization devoted to promoting sustainable development through technological interventions. They share a concept of development that meets the needs of the neediest, is in harmony with the environment, permits grassroot participation, uses local resources and builds local capacity. They believe that development could be promoted through the introduction of new, environmentally benign technologies.

The direction of work of TIDE is as follows:

  • To identify technologies generated at research institutions in the country and abroad,
  • Assess them for their suitability of the environment for which they were intended,
  • Do that little bit of developmental work (which is more often than not required) to make the technology suitable to the milieu that it was conceived
  • Demonstrate and disseminate the same. This would result in income generation at local level, reduction in drudgery, efficiency of operation, reduction in wastage and empowerment of the disadvantaged

TIDE has worked on many Renewable Energy Technologies some of which have been disseminated or are available for dissemination. Some of these are Energy Efficient Stoves, Dryers and Kilns

Energy efficient stoves have been developed for various informal industry sectors like ayurvedic medicine preparation, rubber band making, areca boiling, textile processing, sericulture etc. All these products save at least 25 -30 % fuel. Versatile biomass fired dryers are available in capacities ranging from 25 kg to 1 ton per batch. Small brick, lime and pottery kilns have also been demonstrated.

Besides its work in the area of Renewable Energy Technologies some of the other areas of work that TIDE is currently engaged in are:
  • Technologies for informal process industries
  • Water and environmental management
  • Women and livelihoods
  • Building local entrepreneurships
