[top] [end]Description of Organisation

SCODE is a Kenyan based community development organisation registered as a national NGO in 1996. SCODE seeks to improve the quality of life of marginalised members of society, through building their capacity to realise self-empowerment. This is achieved through training, extension and information networking in sustainable land use management, renewable energy management and other innovative environment friendly approaches to natural resource management.

To enable people in Kenya, especially the poor, to improve their quality of life by adopting technologies and approaches which, are environment friendly and contribute towards sustainable development.

SCODE-service envisages a just world of empowered members of society pursuing environment friendly approaches to natural resources management for enhanced family income and food security.

  • To strengthen the capacity of grassroot communities to sustainably manage their natural resources
  • To sensitise grassroot communities on the need for sustainable management of natural resources
  • To carry out applied research activities in sustainable natural resources management at local, regional and national levels.
  • To establish co-operative links and partnerships with any organisation, agency, or institution in Kenya, and elsewhere, working in natural resources management, energy conservation and community development.

[top] [end]Approach, organisational programmes and activities:

  • Providing training, on production of domestic and institutional improved stoves, construction of biogas, bio-latrines, and solar PV systems design, installation and maintenance,
  • Promoting and creating awareness on renewable energy technologies among target groups
  • Hosting an annual regional training course on household energy conservation and marketing for Eastern and Southern Africa.
  • Promoting tree planting to farmers as a source of fuel for their kitchens, fodder for zero grazing livestock and soil fertility improvement
  • Carrying out surveys on viable energy options for the urban poor
  • Generation of information on thermal electric generators
  • Documenting experience derived from the projects.
