The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs funds sustainable energy projects through its infrastructure and environment initiatives. There is no specific energy policy or budget, but economic development assistance supported five energy projects in 1997, totalling around US$19 million. Projects financed with economic development assistance are often backed up by technical support from JICA. JICA's Energy and Mining Development Study Division (EMDSD), supported by an annual budget of between US$15 and 20 million, typically finances feasibility studies concerning the implementation of environmentally sound technologies.[top] [end]Example projects
