HEDON Household Energy Network

[top] [end]What is HEDON?

The HEDON Household Energy Network was set up in 1992 to act as a focal point for those working in household energy. It aims to promote links among the diverse organizations working in Household Energy in developing countries, including NGOs, government agencies, and consultancies.

[top] [end]Why have you called it HEDON?

The name of HEDON was carefully chosen. HEDON stands for the Household Energy Development Organization's Network, a name which comes from 1992 when HEDON was set up. The preferred name now is "HEDON Household Energy Network" since we're a network with members from all sectors (government, private sector, and NGO to name a few). HEDON Household Energy Network is also much easier to say! Don't forget that we also aim to tackle Household Energy issues HEAD-ON (sorry! :)).

[top] [end]What does HEDON do?

Currently, HEDON functions in two ways:
  • As an electronic network, which those working in household energy can join, and through which they can exchange ideas, circulate papers for comment, and inform others of conferences and meetings which could be of interest.
  • HEDON is maintained by a large number of volunteers around the world.
  • At the HEDON meeting currently held about once a year, where members can meet to focus on a particular theme, and discuss topics of mutual interest.
  • The activities of HEDON and its members are reported in the journal Boiling Point to enable it to reach those who do not have access to computers.

[top] [end]Who is HEDON?

HEDON is co-ordinated by Grant Ballard-Tremeer from Eco Ltd.

HEDON also depends on a large number of volunteers from around the world.

At present (September 2008) there are about 1200 people who are part of the electronic network worldwide and 1700 subscribers to our journal Boiling Point. They belong to NGOs, private companies, consultancies, government departments and universities. Some belong to organizations, some are individuals. The sole criterion for belonging is an interest in household energy in the developing world. Those attending the meeting (held in South Africa in September 2002 at the time of the World Summit) agreed to promote HEDON as a more structured and proactive organization.
