CarbonSIG
Welcome to the CarbonSIG page,

Online e-conference 9-23 January 2008

An online e-conference on Household Energy and Carbon Finance is being held from 9-23 January 2008. HEDON members can sign up for the conference in the user centre once they have logged in. Non-members should join the network first.

Read more about the event here

The conference will take place by email, supported by papers and other documentation to be made available on our website. While a physical meeting is certainly to be preferred, the online format allows for greater flexibility, much lower costs, and wider involvement of stakeholders. Another advantage is that people can 'attend' the conference while continuing their normal work, dedicating an hour or two to the conference early morning or each evening for example. We recently held a similar conference for the CleanAirSIG and you can see more details here

Are you a stove developer seeking carbon finance for your project?

Or how about a carbon offset company looking for new schemes to fund?

If so then our CarbonSIG Marketplace is just for you!

Aimed at facilitating carbon and cooking projects, this free and easy to use service allows members to post offered/wanted adverts to a list. With over 160 members in CarbonSIG, and many more in HEDON, a possible deal could only be a mouse click away! So what are you waiting for? Just click here and see it for yourself.

Users will need to first login to HEDON before adding an entry to the Marketplace. If you're posting then be sure to include your contact details. You can even include a link to your HEDON page or to new pages you have created packed with more details about your organisation. The site can also be accessed from the contents menu on the CarbonSIG pages.

The site is at a 'Beta' stage and so all comments are welcome, especially on what information you would like to see on the site as well as its usability. Direct answers to the following would be useful:
  • Carbon Companies - Is the data that potential projects are asked to provide enough for your requirements?
  • Stove Developers - Are you looking for more of an explanation of the whole carbon funding process?

Any problems or comments please feel free to email me
We need more page content - If you have any articles or information that you would like to include on the HEDON site then please feel free to edit or create pages. As well as GHG emissions reduction CarbonSIG also deals with Carbon Sequestration and Climate Adaptation - for which there is currently next to no content! If you're having any trouble with the site, ideas for content etc then please email me and I'll see what I can do to help

If you have a question/topic that you want to discuss with the CarbonSIG members then please feel free to email the discussion list.

Users are being encouraged to update their professional expertise on their own user page. You can do it here

If you have any CarbonSIG relevant news then please add it to HEDON as a news item or email it to me.

CarbonSIG is looking for sponsors! Are you a carbon offset company looking to raise your profile? Or how about an NGO looking to get involved with cook stoves? If you are interested then please click here.

Thanks, James
Established on 4 September 2006, CarbonSIG connects all those engaged in greenhouse gas emission reduction, carbon sequestration, and climate adaptation who are working to create a sustainable environment that benefits those living in poverty through information, discussion and action around improved household energy.

[top] [end]Aims

CarbonSIG specifically aims to:
  • Connect people and organisations working on household energy and carbon emission reduction, sequestration and adaptation to climate change
  • Support high quality business, government and NGO networking
  • Foster co-ordination and collaboration leading to the creation of new knowledge and ultimately improved household energy provision
  • Support information exchange on carbon emission reduction, carbon sequestration, and climate adaptation in the household energy sector.

[top] [end]Activities

CarbonSIG connects members from around the world through an email discussion list. Members have access to the list archives and other member resources.
  • Recent discussions have focused on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), and preparation of messages for the Nairobi COP12/MOP2 meeting (Nov 2006). See the HEDON news article here.
  • Phillips DAP also released a call for Expressions of Interest for carbon services for their newly developed woodstove via the CarbonSIG email list.

The three main topics covered by CarbonSIG each have there own SIG page:

[top] [end]Members

Good news! There are currently 284 members in CarbonSIG. This was getting too much to put on one page so we've moved the list to a separate members page.

We will eventually be listing members in professional groupings so please, if you haven't already done so:
  • go to your user centre click here
  • update your professional summary
Clicking on the names of members takes you to their personal page on HEDON, where they may have given information about themselves. Again, if you haven't updated your personal page, please do so.

[top] [end]How to join

We will shortly be making a signup option from here. Currently the group may be joined by:
  1. Signing in to HEDON using your username and password here. If you are not already a member, Join the Network here.
  2. Under the usercentre, click on Subscribe for the CarbonSIG.

[top] [end]Background

In November 2005, a Cooking and Carbon Expert Workshop was held at the Environmental Change Institute, Oxford University, UK. Minutes of this meeting can be found here.

One of the key outcomes of this workshop was the need for more joined up working on the issues of climate change associated with biomass use (particularly household energy), if those living in poverty are to benefit from carbon emission reduction initiatives. HEDON Household Energy Network was charged with developing a community of practice to facilitate this process. This ‘Special Interest Group’ – known as ‘CarbonSIG’, was the first Special Interest Group to be formed within HEDON household energy network and started on September 4th, 2006.
