Raising the profile of Clean Indoor Air at the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD)

Table of Contents

The 15th session of the UN's Commission on Sustainable Development, taking place in April/May 2007, offers an important opportunity to mobilise international action to tackle indoor air pollution by facilitating access to energy by the poor.

This year, HEDON is working to support efforts to increase the attention given at CSD 15 to the severe risks of using inefficiently burned biomass and coal for cooking and heating in developing countries.

The CSD was established by the UN General Assembly in December 1992 to review progress on sustainable development goals. The 14th (May 06) and 15th (May 07) sessions of the CSD are focussing on four thematic clusters, including "energy for sustainable development" and "air pollution".

This year - 2007 - the annual CSD meeting will be making important policy decisions, and therefore is an ideal platform for governments to match political will with action.

[top] [end]CSD 15 and how you can help

Firstly, let us know that you are working on this - either attending, lobbying local stakeholders, or prepared to help in some other way. Email Grant on grant@..., with a little about what you are planning or considering. We'll keep you informed about developments on our side.

[top] [end]Press and informing delegates

It is very important to have structured and strategic informal lobbying with delegations to influence the contents of the governments' decisions. Your help to get the message out to your local government delegations is essential. A policy paper has been prepared for use in your lobbying efforts. Download English, French and Spanish versions here.

A press release template is avaiable to download doc file link here (39 KB).
