The Work of the Alternative Energy Unit of the Ceylon Electricity Board by Renuka de Mel
The unit also maintains a Rural Energy Centre at Pattiyapola which provides electricity to about 90 houses in the village using alternative energy technologies. This centre functions as a demonstration and training centre and these facilities extended to include undergraduate trainees interest in alternative energy technologies. In the Hambantota District in South East Sri Lanka a pilot project was launched at Boondala where a solar powered battery charging centre was set-up, providing battery charging facilities for over 50 houses in the Boondala model village and 100 houses in Kotaveheramankade model village. The unit also takes an active interest in the promotion of fuelwood saving stoves under the National Fuelwood Conservation Programme. Stove Programme activities which were confined to outstations are now extended to Colombo District as well. In 1986, 29,783 improved stoves were installed in various parts of the Island. The national energy balance is prepared by this unit which has been a continuing activity since 1982. In 1986 the Energy Unit with the collaboration of the Ministry of Power and Energy conducted a seminar on agricultural residues as a source of energy. A seminar was also conducted on fuelwood conservation programmes. The unit also participates in various exhibitions. It has taken an active role in the promotion of mini hydro activities in the regional network for small hydro power set-up under the Regional Energy Development Programme of ESCAP. A training course on mini hydro was held in December 1986, with the collaboration of ITDG (UK). [top] [end]Contents: Boiling Point 15: Stove Progress in Kenya and Sri Lanka
