An account on biomass gasifier for heat applications in small and micro enterprises in Asia and Africa documenting the participatory approach, the problems encountered and their resolution, as well as socio-economic issues that have had to be confronted.

Towards cleaner technologies: a process story on biomass gasifier for heat applications in small and micro enterprises

This book was released by HE Mamadou Lamine Loum, former Prime Minister of Senegal during DSDS 2007 at Delhi.

This book is a process document; a brief, non-technical account of the process by which Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) worked in partnership to successfully develop and demonstrate energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly biomass gasifier systems for heat applications in small and micro enterprises (SMiEs), and the measures taken to replicate the systems in other applications throughout the country. It highlights the participatory approach to develop technological solutions for SMiEs, the problems encountered and their resolution, as well as socio-economic issues that have had to be confronted and tackled. It describes the experiences of project teams and other stakeholders in the field, and discusses both their achievements and their setbacks - for lessons may be drawn from these by future researchers and others interested in the field. We feel that the experiences captured in this book will be of immense interest and value to researchers, policy makers, donor organizations, NGOs, and others involved in technological and social interventions among small and micro enterprises, particularly in developing countries.
