The standard cookstove in Pakistan is very inefficient, with most of the heat lost out the sides of the three stone fire. Each family has to find firewood locally, which inevitably results in deforestation. Additionally, this is a very unhealthy method of cooking, with evidence pointing to serious health implications for women in using fuelwood and dried animal dung, especially when pregnant.

In a camp for displaced people, the inhabitants explain that they have to pay a lot for firewood and dry dung. Smoky, seriously inefficient, costly and unhealthy; it is the worst possible approach, but it is the one method used by everyone here.

It need not be so as the people in this region are willing to try other methods. They said 'just show us another design and we will try it!'
