It is one of various groups participating in a Crisis Relief Fire and Disaster Indaba in Masiphumelele near the Cape Town coastal suburb of Fish Hoek.

The association’s Pumzile Nteyi conceded that paraffin remains a major threat to the lives of thousands of people still living in shacks.

He said while most people depend on it for cooking, it is also one of the leading causes of deadly shack fires in the country.

Nteyi believes government must either prohibit the use of paraffin or ensure paraffin stoves on the market have been approved by the bureau of standards.
