COP16 side event: discussing the transition to a low carbon energy future

Entitled “Finance to push forward clean technology: a forum for business and policy-makers”, this COP16 side event organised by REEEP and IETA brought together a range of prominent figures from governments, multilateral organisations and the private sector for a panel discussion moderated by Henry Derwent, the CEO of the International Emissions Trading Association.

Energy-efficient buildings: the no-brainer for mitigating climate change
Buildings are responsible for 40% of final energy use in most countries. Clearly, energy-efficient building design, construction and retrofits are all vital in meeting the climate change challenge. Against this background, the REEEP-EEC organised side event to the COP16 proceedings in Cancún “Energy-efficient buildings: the no-brainer for mitigating climate change” brought together key architects and developers to offer concrete ideas for taking action.

What the agreement is about
The UN Climate Change Conference in Cancún, which took place from 29 November-11 December 2010, concluded with agreement on a package of decisions. The Cancún Agreements include decisions under both the Convention and Protocol negotiating tracks, and contain provisions on adaptation, REDD+, technology, mitigation and finance.

New edition of the SERN policy review
The fifth edition of the SERN policy and regulation energy review has been released. This energy database outlines the latest policy frameworks, regulatory institutions and mechanisms relevant to renewable energy and energy efficiency, country by country.

Suva host to international talks on PICs’ energy future
REEEP travelled to Fiji in early December to participate in the International Conference on Renewable Energy and Climate Change and to the consultation on the implementation plan for energy security in the Pacific.

“Mapping Exercise of Energy Efficient Products”: APEC report released
The project report, "Reducing Trade Barriers for Environmental Goods & Services in APEC region (Mapping Exercise of Energy Efficient Products)", provides a preliminary analysis of divergence and convergence among APEC economies with regard to energy-efficient product standards and labeling (S&L) and testing and measurement procedures.

Low-carbon tourism in Fiji
During the Cancun conference, Fiji’s acting Environment permanent secretary Saverio Baleikanacea was quoted in the Fiji Times as saying that “the proposed Fijian Hotel Clean Development Program will be a world first for the tourism sector." This REEEP-funded project with the Greenlight Technology Group aims to create an alliance of stakeholders in Fiji’s hotels and resorts sector to widen the uptake of renewable energy.

Launch of the Sustainable Energy Industry Association of the Pacific Islands

Following six months of planning, and intensive workshops and meetings with renewable energy companies, agencies and institutions in the Pacific Islands region, the Sustainable Energy Industry Association of the Pacific Islands (SEIAPI) was launched with the first meeting of the executive committee being held in Guam on the 24 and 25 November. The association aims to foster sustainable energy (renewable energy and energy efficiency) use in the Pacific region.

E+Co a finalist for Zayed Future Energy Prize
he Zayed Future Energy Prize today announced that E+Co has been selected as one of six finalists for this prestigious prize, which honors and rewards individuals, companies, or organizations that are tackling pressing energy issues. The winner, as well as two runners-up, will be announced in Abu Dhabi on January 18th during the World Future Energy Summit.

“Poor people's energy outlook 2010” released
Right now, half the world’s population have no access to modern energy. ‘Business as usual’ projections show that the situation will be the same in 20 years time. The Poor people’s energy outlook 2010 seeks to highlight this injustice as a first step to ending it. It presents the perspective of those living in energy poverty and those for whom energy access has been life changing.
