Electrical field technician

The Energy & Development Group (EDG) is looking to employ a qualified technician on a full-time basis to monitor the technical quality of solar home system installations in the rural Eastern Cape Province. The job requires verification of installation information to enable payments to be made for the works.

Job Description

The Field Technician will be responsible for carrying out and managing all field monitoring activities related to the technical installation performance of the contractor in the Eastern Cape. This includes managing the local office comprising of two other staff.

Tasks

Reviewing status of system installations, sampling of PV installations:
  • Review rollout of installations
  • Keep database of the status of all installations based on information provided by installer
  • Monitor proximity of installations to grid extension activities using data-base
  • Plan and sample PV installations for field surveying
  • Sustainability of the solar home systems in the field
  • Monitor the technical and installation standards by sampling and field inspections, and completion of technical commissioning forms
Data-logging of sample PV systems:
  • Manage and maintain data loggers at randomly selected PV systems clients. Have ability to analyses the logged data with support from EDG.
Liaison:
  • Monitor dispute resolution between service provider and stakeholders
  • Take part in stakeholder meetings with support from community liaison officer,
  • Provide technical inputs in case of dispute resolution
Reporting:
  • Managing and taking responsibility for the small local office, including monthly reporting for office activities and vehicles
  • Reporting to EDG on PV system roll-out, field sampling, field inspections, datalogging, dispute resolutions
  • Follow requisite standards, guidelines and operational procedures to ensure quality standards of reporting are met.

Job Specification

The ideal candidate will:
  • Have a technical, electrical qualification (level T4);
  • Preferably 2-3 years practical experience, and ideally some experience with solar electrical systems (not necessary or even likely… we will provide the training);
  • Have a valid driver’s license;
  • Be able to speak Xhosa ideally;
  • Have good English writing skills;
  • Be computer-literate, with excellent Microsoft Office skills (incl. Microsoft
Access) and programming experience (in what?);
  • Accountable and able to run a small office.
  • Have some experience working in multi-cultural contexts;
  • Be able to interact sensitively and appropriately with government officials, the rural poor and a host of other diverse stakeholders, and have an appreciation of the development context
  • Be able to provide sound technical inputs in cases requiring dispute resolution.
Be willing to relocate to rural Eastern Cape Queenstown area.

Community Liaison Officer

The Energy & Development Group (EDG) is looking to employ a qualified Community Liaison Officer on a full-time basis to monitor the social aspects surrounding solar home system installations in the rural Eastern Cape Province.

Job Description

The Community Liaison Officer will be responsible for carrying out and managing all field monitoring activities related to the community performance of the contractor in the Eastern Cape.

Tasks

Monitor:
  • Conduct customer satisfaction surveys
  • Monitor the performance of the service provider in terms of call-out times, maintenance, customer relations etc.)
Training:
  • Train field workers who will assist with customer satisfaction surveys and monitoring activities.
Liaison:
  • Regularly liaise with key figures in the community (traditional leadership, community leaders, local authorities etc.)
  • Monitor dispute resolution between service provider and stakeholders
  • Conduct stakeholder meetings
  • Provide input in support of dispute resolution
Reporting:
  • Reporting to EDG on monitoring activities, dispute resolutions
  • Follow requisite standards, guidelines and operational procedures to ensure quality standards of reporting are met.
  • Make recommendations with regards to service provision, customer communication, dispute resolution etc.

  • Preferably 2-3 years practical experience working in the development field;
  • Have a valid driver’s license;
