Financing national programmes on domestic biogas in Asia

The Hague – From 10 to 12 November, SNV organises, in cooperation with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), the International Workshop: “Financing national programmes on domestic biogas in Asia” in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Domestic biogas plants are a proven technology in providing clean gas for cooking and fertiliser for households raising livestock.

SNV is active in domestic biogas dissemination since 1989 in Asia and since 2006 in Africa. One of the key features of the national biogas programmes we assist setting-up and implementing, is our ‘multi-stakeholder sector development approach’.

SNV aims to share its gained knowledge and create a platform for discussion in order to improve and scale up practices worldwide. A number of 75 practitioners, experts and policy makers are expected to intensively exchange knowledge and experiences on the dissemination of domestic biogas plants.

At the event, the Energy 4 All Working Group on Domestic Biogas, a partnership initiative of the ADB, will have its annual meeting. The Working Group will lead country-based sessions to arrive at planning of production targets, estimated costs and proposed financing of national programmes on domestic biogas in Asia up to 2015/16. SNV was invited to lead this Working Group, and formulated a proposal to install one million biogas plants across the continent by 2015/2016.

SNV encourages that more countries embark on market-based domestic biogas programmes. The Workshop functions as an important platform to discuss effective utilisation of public and private resources that contribute to viable domestic biogas sectors.
