Progressing from Terra Preta de Índios to the Whole World

IBI is pleased to announce the 3rd International Biochar Conference, IBI 2010, will be held September 12 - 16, 2010 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Sustainable biochar is a powerfully simple tool to fight global warming. This 2,000 year-old practice converts agricultural waste into a soil enhancer that can hold carbon, boost food security, and discourage deforestation.It’s one of the few technologies that is relatively inexpensive, widely applicable and quickly scalable.

Conference Themes and Topics

The conference organizers are now accepting abstracts for presentations until April 15, 2010. The organizing and scientific committees are busy with a working agenda. Oral presentations and papers will be selected from abstracts received. Session topics will include:
  1. Biochar production and new products. Biomass sources, residues and co-products recycling. Management of emissions, wastes and by-products from biochar production.
  2. Integrated biochar systems. Design and evaluation of small and large scale systems.
  3. Characterisation of fresh and aged biochars. Physico-chemical characterization of structural recalcitrance and functionalities. IBI’s biochar characterization effort.
  4. Biochar quantification in the environment.
  5. Biochar amendments to soils. Agronomic evaluations and effects on soil C dynamics.
  6. Terra Preta de Índios: state of the art.
  7. Climate change mitigation value and potential.
  8. Sustainability, certification, and legislation.
  9. Commercialising biochar and large scale dissemination - economic, commercial, and industrial issues.
  10. Emissions trading and climate change policy.


All submissions must be received no later than midnight US/Eastern Time '15 April 2010. Any proposal received after this time will not be accepted. Submissions can be made in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.

All abstracts will be considered for posters. Oral presentations will be selected from abstracts received. Notification of acceptance will be provided by May 15, 2010.

Prizes will be awarded for the best student oral and poster presentations.

The conference will be held at the Rio Orthon Palace, a five star hotel located in the popular tourist/beach area of Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro.
