The future predictions of energy demand, limitations of hydro expansion and inadequate fossil fuel supplies in Sri Lanka suggests the need for a diversity of power sources in the future. It has been recognized that renewable energy (particularly biomass, hydro, wind and solar) will have an important role in meeting future energy demands.

The investigation of the Sri Lankan context indicates that, nearly 47% of the present energy need is met by biomass and there is a high potential for developing the biomass energy sector to be used as commercial energy resources. Therefore, the government of Sri Lanka, public interest groups and other development agencies have been attempting to develop this sector as part of the solution for energy security and energy independence.
