These three practical workshops will explore timber shelter techniques, building with straw bale, and rammed earth construction. Trainers are experts in each material, with experience in the humanitarian and development sectors. Participants will build with each material and weigh up their pros and cons for use in response to disasters and emergencies, transition and recovery.

Straw Bale

July 23rd - 24th - Bee Rowan and Paulo Mellett (amazonails)

Learn the exciting potential of straw bale construction in this hands-on workshop building load-bearing and infill structures, techniques for pinning and stabilising walls, windows and doors. Discover an affordable, super-insulating and non-toxic building material for use in emergency, transition and recovery.

Rammed Earth

28-29th July - July 28th - 29th / Rowland Keable (RamCast) and Jason Hawkes

This workshop, run by rammed earth expert Rowland Keable, introduces participants to building with rammed earth, with practical sessions building earth walls, making window and door openings and applying different clay and plaster finishes.
