The World Energy Council (WEC)

The World Energy Council (WEC) is the foremost global multi-energy organisation in the world today.

WEC has Member Committees in over 90 countries, including most of the largest energy-producing and energy consuming countries. The 80-year-old organisation covers all types of energy, including coal, oil, natural gas?, nuclear?, hydro?, and renewables?, and is UN-accredited, non-governmental, non-commercial and non-aligned.

WEC is a UK-registered charity headquartered in London. WEC Services Limited was established in 2001 as the incorporated trading subsidiary of WEC.

The current WEC work programme includes studies on the following: Drivers of the Energy Scene, Energy Market Reforms, Energy Technologies in the 21st Century, Energy & Climate Change and Life Cycle Analysis. In addition there is ongoing work in the Technical Programme on: Energy Resources, Performance of Generating Plant, Cleaner Fossil Fuel Systems, GHG Emissions Reductions, Energy Efficiency Policies and Renewable Energy.

In addition to work with a global focus WEC also works at a regional level. This work has recently produced studies on Electricity Market Creation in Asia Pacific, regional energy integration in Africa, Energy Markets in Transition in Latin America, renewable energy in South Asia.In Eastern Europe and the CIS studies on restructuring and privatisation in the coal industries and in the district heating and combined heat and power sector have also been completed. In Asia-Pacific work on cross border cooperation is looking at greenhouse gas emissions reduction through joint implementation and clean development mechanisms (CDM) and a primer on the latter has been prepared.
