PureSIG: Examples of Productive Use of Energy
[top] [end]Enterprise incubationProductive use container (PUC) project in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa User: Wikus Kruger and User: Robert Aitken[top] [end]Energy businessesRamesh Kumar Nibhoria of Nishant Bioenergy (P) Limited (www.ashdenawards.org/winners/nishant), who is one of the enthusiastic contributers to this list. Nishant Bioenergy is a good example of many of the Ashden Award winners, where the installation of renewable energy technology, such as stoves, earns income for the installer, but the users do not actually earn extra income from using the stoves. They save a lot of money, from replacing inefficient wood stoves or LPG stoves, but do not gain extra income from their use User: Dr David Fulford and User: Ramesh NibhoriaOther fuel efficient stove projects, such as GIRA in Mexico (www.ashdenawards.org/winners/gira), sell stoves to restaurant owners and commercial tortilla makers, who can earn extra income by increasing production and having a smoke free environment that attracts customers. As well as saving expenditure, these people can see a rise in their income from cooking food User: Dr David Fulford Microsolar as an income generating activity, see http://biodesign.webeden.co.uk User: Graham Knight [top] [end]Income from the use of energyRaGa - in Latur, India to convert municipal organic waste & biomass to charcoal, based on Dr Priya Karve's (of ARTI) technology (thanks to Ashden Awards for rewarding environment impacting innovations). This is a collaborative project between RaGa, ARTI, Samuchit Envirotec & a local rag pickers association. Project generates steady employment (approx $2/day) for 25+ members of the association & women's SHG (Self Help Group) of the leprosy colony User: Anil Ravi and see 1138/news.htmAn example of people earning income from the use of energy are the micro-hydro projects set up by Practical Action, Peru (www.ashdenawards.org/winners/practicalaction) User: Dr David Fulford Human stories from Bhadohi solar project, Winrock International India (265 KB) contains examples of Solar Lanterns being used for productive users. They are examples of how lighting enhances existing productive activities. User: Veena Joshi [top] [end]Enterprise development fundsS3IDF runs a fund to develop innovative energy service models for enterprises. User: Veena Joshi[top] [end]CompilationsThe publication "Waterpower for a village business" includes examples of productive use in the context of pico hydro. It is available on the Nottingham University's website www.eee.nottingham.ac.uk/picohydro/documents.html, Look under manuals and 'Waterpower for a village business' User: Phil MaherRestio Energy's PURE Portal (www.restio.co.za/pureportal) called "renewable and hybrid energy access for productive use". It is basically a relatively quick overview of international PURE experiences. With regards to specific projects, the most helpful will probably be the appendix at the back, which contains very short descriptions of about 40+ cases of PURE from around the world. One of these projects, HELP (based in Nepal), deliberately includes external market links as part of their project, which in my view greatly increases its sustainability. There are quite a number of other such examples. User: Wikus Kruger Categories: PureSIG | ||||
