PureSIG
Established in March 2008, PureSIG connects all those engaged in the productive use of energy and renewable energy in developing countries.

The role of energy in poverty reduction is generally considered to be positive. However, practise often defeats theory when energy projects have attemped to contribute to the Millennium Development Goal 1: The link between energy supply and increased opportunities for income generation for the poor. Not only does this topic recieve very little attention from national governments who tend to focus on large scale energy supply especially for energy intensive industry, but also from practitioners in the field of small scale energy supply. The term productive uses of energy is commonly used for income generation by selling energy or energy technologies, and sometimes in a broad sense, including energy services to schools and health services. Both uses of of the term "productive uses" divert attention away from the potentially huge, but in practice small, contribution of modern (renewable) energy to income generation in small enterprises by the poor themselves.

We would like to invite you to the online PureSIG discussion on the role of energy in rural income generation. This specific session is a follow up to the meeting a group of 15 experts had at SDC in Delhi on 13 February, related to research performed by User:Annemarije Kooijman in the Indian Himalayas. It was clear in the discussion that there remains a lot to be discussed and that sharing experience and insights could really contribute to moving energy project implementation and energy policy forward in a manner that would strengthen the rural incomes.

Below please find a document with an introduction letter and suggested discussion points, and the presentation by User: Annemarije Kooijman with some additional text for clarification in the notes. It would be great if the Indian experts who participated in the could formulate a response based on their own expertise on at least 2 points during the set discussion session to follow up on the India workshop, so that we can really get a momentum of discussion moving. In the PureSIG network, people from other countries will join in and extend the discussion later on. Looking forward to an interesting discussion!
