Parallax - Sustainable Development Solutions (Pty) Ltd[top] [end]Our BusinessParallax is a limited liability company, based in Cape Town, South Africa, with a second office in the United Kingdom. The aim of our business is to achieve sustainable development through environmentally sound energy solutions. Our geographical target is Southern Africa, with a particular emphasis on rural areas. We work with both the public & private sectors, with local, national and international government bodies, and with companies that wish to extend their markets or that have a need to demonstrate their social involvement in an environmentally responsible manner. We give particular priority to the benefits from public private sector partnerships (PPPs) to reach development goals. Our role is to identify relevant development activities from real needs on the ground, to match these to the investment interests of commercial companies and/or government programmes, and then to manage the implementation of action required.Our business is based upon providing affordable energy solutions, most often to people in rural areas. We see the supply of energy as a means to an end, offering improved livelihoods, opportunities for income-generating activity and hence poverty alleviation. Access to non-grid fuels is an essential component of this process. Parallax manages activity that demonstrates the potential for increased use of such fuels in remote communities. Parallax is involved with a wide range of issues that must be addressed in order to deal with the barriers presented by limited affordability and accessibility. Our company is committed to overcoming these barriers using our depth of expertise and wide-ranging national and international experience. [top] [end]Our PeopleOur business is based upon the common goals of our two principal Directors and founders, Mr Dean Cooper and Ms Cindy Sampson, who have extensive experience of global energy/environmental concerns, sustainable development solutions, and international partnerships. Dean Cooper has worked in energy & environmental sectors for more than 10 years. He has been based in the UK, Belgium, South Africa and Botswana for the European Commission, and has focused on managing projects in developing areas. Before joining Parallax he managed an NPO in Tanzania, and worked in the UK and South Africa on various sustainable change initiatives. Cindy Sampson has a background in law and structured finance, and worked for Shell S A for 7 years in their legal and new business development departments. She has also spent time in the USA working with various inner city & student business incubator initiatives. Before joining Parallax she worked with electricity service providers on urban & rural energisation projects and with various development consultants on issues such as the regulatory framework for natural gas in South Africa.[top] [end]Our ApproachAt Parallax we recognise the importance of seeing things differently. By using our access to a network of key decision-makers, and understanding the potential of locally available resources, Parallax matches the different needs of stakeholders to real solutions. We believe that sustainable solutions are only achieved by working together with local people, not by imposing external remedies that are untried under local conditions. A key feature of our approach is to maximise the use of local resources, particularly the skills of local people. We carefully monitor this process to ensure that practical benefits are achieved from all perspectives.
