Macuata Soqosoqo ni Marama aka Macuata Women's Association, Fiji Islands

The Macuata Soqosoqo ni Marama’s vision capitulates the importance of a holistic approach towards community development. Community development does not only focus on community infrastructure like roads and health centers, but equally important, is the community cultural values which integrates the infrastructure with the supporting life structures. This integration and intertwined structures provides the enabling environment for the people in the community to live a life that provides a lifestyle that can be enjoyed in the rural community, without having to move to the urban centres. The Women’s organization hopes that in the next 10 years, it will be able to demonstrate that the organization’s engagement in the community will make a difference in the Macuata people’s lives.

The Macuata Soqosoqo ni Marama considers education, conservation, livelihood, preservation of cultural and traditional knowledge and fair gender equity on decision making as important community cultural values. These cultural values are intertwined and interconnected, which make up and forms a rural community in Macuata. These cultural values needs to be strengthened and further supported through adult education and training or other means of capacity building. These cultural values are relevant community development life-skills needs and the importance of it cannot be undermined in a village and/or settlement community. The success of community development will take into consideration all the cultural values, supported by the infrastructure development and maintenance, providing support mechanisms and the communities making informed decisions.

Therefore, to put the above in perspective, the Macuata Soqosoqo ni Marama vision believes that “We, the women of Macuata commit to the enhancement and development of our Province, through the promotion of education for our children, and the positive development of all our communities through essential and effective infrastructure, the protection of our natural resources, the preservation and maintenance of our Christian, cultural and traditional values and beliefs, so that we sustain and encourage greater opportunities for all our people and our future Macuata generations.”
