This means increasing the resilience of their livelihoods, enhancing the ability of their communities to identify and plan for the likely future climate threats they may face and diversifying their sources of income. He will describe how an important part of this process is to detect the level of climate change that has occurred and is likely in the future and to attribute livelihood risks correctly to climate or other risk factors. With 44% of people in India and over 70% in Africa not connected to grid sources of electricity, renewable energy is a key resource in this adaptation process.
Richard Ewbank, ChristianAid | Before working for ChristianAid Richard spent 20 years (1987 – 2007) focusing on development in Sub-Saharan Africa, including smallholder agriculture, rural and urban microfinance, pastoralist development, programme management, monitoring and evaluation, emergency/conflict response and climate change adaptation. This included 5 years in Malawi (with the Ministry of Agriculture and UNICEF), one year in Zimbabwe (also with UNICEF) and 2 years in Kenya (with Africa Now). From 1996 – 2007 he worked on UK-and-Africa based programme support across 10 countries in the Horn, East and Southern Africa. Since joining Christian Aid as Climate Change Programme Coordinator in January 2008, work has so far directly covered Africa, Central America, Central and South Asia and indirectly South America and South-East Asia. This involves providing support to country programmes and partners on adaptation to climate change and has included review of ongoing livelihoods and disaster risk reduction work from a climate change perspective, strategy and programme planning support on community-based adaptation, the development of adaptation toolkits/guidelines, integrating renewable energy into climate change/livelihoods work and advocacy on climate finance.
Phil Oldham has been working in International Relief and Development for the past 20 years. He has lived in Russia, Croatia, Bosnia, Eritrea, Albania, DRC, and Ghana and currently works for Mercy Corps as the Regional Director for Haiti, West and Central Africa. He speaks Russian, Serbo-Croatian, and French.
Christian Aid | At Christian Aid we believe that poverty is an outrage against humanity. It robs people of dignity, freedom and hope, of power over their own lives. Christian Aid has a vision - an end to poverty - and we believe that vision can become a reality. Our essential purpose is to expose the scandal of poverty; to help in practical ways to root it out from the world; and to challenge and change structures and systems that favour the rich and powerful over the poor and marginalised. To achieve this, we work in over 40 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America on secure livelihoods, economic justice, accountable governance and HIV/AIDS, as well as through global advocacy and campaigning.
