IEI is a Southern-conceived, Southern-led and Southern-located South-South-North partnership. It is a small, independent, international non-governmental public-purpose organization led by internationally recognized energy experts, and with regional offices, staff and programs in Latin America and Asia. The Regional Energy Initiative (REI) office in Cape Town (South Africa) was closed. Nevertherless, the opening of new REIs is being actively explored.
What is IEI’s Objective?
To promote — initiate, strengthen and advance — the efficient production and use of energy for sustainable development.
IEI - Status
The International Energy Initiative was founded by Professors José Goldemberg (Brazil), Amulya Reddy (India), Thomas Johansson (Sweden) and Dr Robert Williams (USA), authors of Energy for a Sustainable World (Wiley Eastern Limited, 1988). The intent was to further develop analysis around sustainable energy development and to translate these ideas into practice.
At the time the book was published, thinking about energy was dominated by a supply-oriented paradigm, with economic development equated to economic growth, in turn equated to centralized power production.
Energy for Sustainable World (ESW) marked a major departure from this paradigm, dominant at the time. The most important finding was that “it is possible to formulate energy strategies which are not only compatible with, but even contribute to, the solution of other major global problems…
“The formulation of such energy strategies (requires) shifting the focus of energy analysis from the traditional preoccupation with energy supplies to the end-uses of energy. In this end-use approach, much closer attention is paid to… human needs served by energy, the technical and economic details of how energy is being used and alternative technological options for providing the (needed) energy services.”
Journal Energy for Sustainable Development
Energy for Sustainable Development (ESD) focuses on energy as an instrument for fostering sustainable development. IEI publishes ESD as a medium for information exchange, for conveying the results of analytical and training efforts, and for sharing the lessons learnt from field projects. ESD’s peer-reviewed articles are concerned with energy technologies, or with energy goals, policies, strategies, and projects. ESD welcomes articles from around the world, but especially seeks to promote South-South interaction.
ESD is still the only journal dealing with key aspects of sustainable development in the context of energy, especially for developing countries.
From time to time, issues are devoted to specific themes and selected countries. Recent special issues include Clean Cooking, International Bioenergy Trade and Development, Biofuels for Transport, and Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Development. 2007-07-15 21:37:532007-07-15 17:17:120organisation<_owner>925<_group>127<_origin>1viewedit
