Ethanol Production in North America

Another large alcohol programme is that of the USA, where corn (maize) is used as the feedstock for ethanol production. However this is a more energy intensive crop to produce and process and so has a lower energy balance than sugarcane, a recent point of contention among some experts. When comparing fuel production, the energy balance is the difference between the energy produced by one unit of the fuel and the energy required to produce that unit (i.e. fertiliser, agricultural machinery, transport, processing etc).
