Ethanol Production in Africa

[top] [end]Malawi

An example of a smaller alcohol programme is that of Malawi, in Sub Saharan Africa. Due to both the lack of a developed infrastructure and a landlocked status, the country suffers from high transportation costs, which only increases the impact that imported petroleum has on the economy. Since 1982 the country's fuel-blending programme has taken advantage of the economically favourable conditions for ethanol production from sugar industry waste (molasses), and annual production is over 10 million litres. Government policy has been to blend ethanol with petrol in a 2:8 ratio but a recent switch to unleaded petrol has dropped this to 1:8
