CIDA's mandate is to support sustainable development in developing countries and technical cooperation in countries in transition in order to reduce poverty and to contribute to a more secure, equitable, and prosperous world. CIDA's primary goal in the energy sector is to support environmentally and economically sustainable energy development and use.

Current assistance is typically given for strengthening the capacity of sector institutions, supporting the development of infrastructure where appropriate, improving efficiency in end use, and reforming regulatory systems.

CIDA provides funding for international development programs and projects through contributions to Canadian and international institutions of many kinds. The Agency also enters into contracts with Canadian companies for the implementation of their programs and projects.
