Improved stove promotion by a cartoon story from Ministry of Rural Development
A series of 23 cartoon groups, with brief French language captions, designed for use with womens groups. The story starts with a village woman discussing the problem of collecting firewood with her friends. She goes to see a neighbour with a new, improved stove and explains the benefits in fuel saving, faster and safer cooking, a cleaner and less smokey kitchen etc. So the woman goes to visit the local F.A.O. stoves demonstration centre and decides to build her own stove with the assistance of the stove artisan at a small charge. The cartoons explain how they did it. She collects and prepares the clay etc. and helps him make the stove. The stove is of bricks and/or mud, is built in situ in the kitchen and has a clay chimney. It is designed for one or more spherical based pots which sit well into the stove for good heat transfer. The cartoons are intended to be used by trained stove promoters/builders and the authors emphasise that they should first be discussed with village leaders and adapted to suit local customers. The cartoons do not give design or construction details, which should already have been developed by the stove project and will be familiar to the artisans. The story could easily be adapted for role playing with the village women.
