The PREP-brochure on renewable energy throughout the food supply chain contains good practice projects from Nigeria, Pakistan, Nicaragua, Cambodia, and Kenya:
Nigeria: Low Cost Biodigester for Sustainable Cooking
Eco Conscious Developments (ECODEV) created a system which combines farming and biogas production through a biodigester made from local materials to improve the critical energy situation.
Pakistan: Solar Dryer for the Ripening and Drying of Dates
The Pakistan Council of Renewable Energy Technologies has promoted and supported the introduction of solar food dryers enabling the farmers to produce high quality fruit energy efficient.
Nicaragua: Using Biomass and Hydroelectricity for Rice Processing
A rice thresher and drying centre run by renewable energy enables the San Jose de Bocay community to process more rice locally and to add value to the product increasing the local income and rice production as important nourishment.
Cambodia: Providing Schools with efficient fuel stoves through a School Feeding Programme
This project replaced wood intensive with new high efficiency cooking stoves in schools improving the financial situation of the schools, saving firewood and providing jobs due to stove construction.
Kenya: Sunny Solutions – Promoting Affordable Solar Cookers in Eastern Africa
Solar Cookers International (EA) promotes the dissemination of affordable solar cookers to reduce the dependency on fuels, to improve drinking water and health, to protect the environment and therefore ecosystem services.
Furthermore WISIONS took the chance to present the project ‘Food processing and conservation through appropriate solar energy technology’ supported by SEPS, the Sustainable Energy Project Support, the other action field of WISIONS.
