Arvind Reddy, Group Coordinator at Winrock International, has submitted an article relating to a field project he is working on in India: "Improving access to clean energy & modern lighting based on solar photovoltaic applications in Jaunpur district "With a population of 3.9 million (Census 2001) Uttar Pradesh is one of the largest districts of the country (by population). Small land holdings, landless workforce, low per capita income, and low literacy rate characterize the predominantly agrarian society. In addition to the agricultural activities, carpet weaving and production of scent are the major economic activities in the area. Many villages in Jaunpur lack reliable access to conventional forms of energy systems that have the potential to bring about improvements in quality of life and support development by enabling public services (for instance, education and health) and productive uses (for instance, by increasing the productive hours in a day)."
