Nordic Council of Ministers' Bio-Energy Prize 2008 Has Been Announced

HEDON member, Professor Dan Asplund from Finland has been awarded the Prize and a cheque for DKK 50,000 by the Swedish Minister of Agriculture, Eskil Erlandsson. Heartiest Congratulations Professor!

Professor Dan Asplund from Finland has been awarded the Nordic Council of Ministers' Bio-Energy Prize 2008. The prize, and a cheque for DKK 50,000 were handed over by the Swedish Minister of Agriculture, Eskil Erlandsson, during a meeting of Nordic ministers.

Dan Asplund, born 1948, is a national, Nordic and internationally respected expert in the bio-energy field. For just over 30 years he has successfully developed and promoted the use of renewable energy sources, particularly bio-energy technology, in both the public and private sectors.

Asplund has been a researcher, manager and research professor at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland as well as a director of the Jyväskylä Science Park. He headed up Finland's national bio-energy technology programme 1993-1998, the country's biggest ever investment in bio-energy. Throughout his career Asplund has also been the prime mover behind the Nordic bio-energy conferences.He has worked as Finland's Nordic co-ordinator for bio-energy and for the international energy organisation IEA. He has also served as President of the European biomass organisation AEBIOMand written hundreds of scientific publications and articles about bioenergy for periodicals and newspapers at home and abroad.

The Bio-energy Prize was handed over at the Council of Ministers for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Agriculture, Food and Forestry (MR-FJLS) summer meeting in Växjö, 25-27 June, which is being held under the auspices of the Swedish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers 2008.

The prize, which was awarded for the second time, goes to an individual or organisation for an outstanding contribution to the promotion, use or production of bio-energy. Last year, it went to Erik Eid Hohle, who runs the Energy Farm in Hadeland, Norway.
