Neighboring countries want to strengthen partnership to fight poverty

On March 1st, 2008, GTZ hosted an energy workshop in Islamabad to facilitate the exchange of experiences and lessons learnt, between two neighboring countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Representatives from the Afghan Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW), the Pakistan Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) were present. The workshop was an important step to increase the understanding of the opportunities and risks for closer cooperation between German Technical Cooperation Energy Programs in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The SAARC included this event in the wider framework of the South Asian Regional Cooperation.

During the workshop, Engineer Munsif presented the energy supply situation in Afghanistan. He stressed the importance on focusing on renewable energies and strengthening coordination and cooperation between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

All the participants have expressed the interest to have a second workshop as soon as possible to continue this important exercise. The GTZ Renewable Energy Supply for Rural Areas (ESRA) program conveyed that they would be happy to host, together with the MEW, a next meeting in Afghanistan. Pia Cantini
