[top] [end]Project background

Development Alternatives, India (DA), during its long association with the region, realized that a substantial portion of the income of rural families here was spent on energy requirements. Available options were not only costly but also inefficient, pollution causing and unreliable which caused numerous health and other related problems. The village community thus expressed its willingness to pay for cost effective, clean, convenient and reliable energy services.

[top] [end]Project approach and activities

The interventions for improving the current energy services are being made effective through the processes of social mobilization, product and technology customization, service promotion and viable credit mechanisms. The delivery of energy products and services would take place through village based individual and group enterprises. An energy bank/technology resource centre is also envisaged to provide technology customization, technical and managerial supports to enterprises.

[top] [end]Deliverables and benefits

The outputs of the project can be listed as follows:
  1. Information regarding the benefits and availability of improved domestic and community energy products and services.
  2. Improved technological options for cooking fuel, cooking devices and kitchen designs.
  3. Reliable lighting and safe drinking water solutions for domestic use.
  4. The Technology Resource Centre for servicing the technological, finance, capacity building and market management support needs of the stakeholders.
  5. Systems for supply of energy products and services to families and village based enterprises.
  6. Operationalization of credit based finance mechanisms for accessing energy products and services for domestic and village based economic activity.
  7. Discernable improvements in indoor air quality and family health, especially of women.
  8. Documentation of quantifiable improvements in fuel/cooking system efficiencies and tangible cost savings.
  9. Comprehensive project documentation that direct further expansion in Bundelkhand and facilitates replication in other regions.
It is envisaged that 50% of the target population of about 3000 families spread across 27 villages will benefit from clean cooking and lighting solutions.
